Elbe Sandstone Mountains view in the morning light

The ascent to the Lilienstein began early in the morning in the dark. The weather forecast had promised 85 per cent humidity, which increased the chance of seeing patches of mist in the valleys. The morning light was marvellous, giving us an unforgettable experience of nature.

Thundercloud over wide landscape

Fascinated, I looked at the approaching thundercloud over the wide floodplain landscape on the Oder River. Its enormous size was impressive. Soon it will eclipse the sun, then violent gusts of wind set in and a heavy downpour descends, accompanied by thunder and lightning. A wonderful spectacle of nature.

Threatening thundercloud

This photo shows the lower part of the huge storm front. It travelled parallel to the course of the Oder for a long time. It was very exciting to watch it during the cycle tour. It only reached us later, after we had reached a restaurant on the Oder cycle path.

Elbe Sandstone Mountains - Downward

If you stand in front of the steep "Holy Staircase" at the top, it looks as if you are descending into a bottomless pit. The metal staircase is a very typical motif for the Elbe Sandstone Mountains, here in an unusual perspective.

Frozen blades of grass

Rain after a heavy frost had covered nature with a thick layer of ice, everything looked enchanted. I wanted to capture this unusual weather situation in a picture. It was only possible to move around on the icy paths in the Eastern Ore Mountains with great care.

A thunderstorm is brewing on the Oder river

During a bicycle tour along the Oder river I could observe this spectacular weather situation. Again and again thunderstorm cells passed through, bringing heavy rain, then the sun shone again as if nothing had happened. The contrast between the dark cloud regions and the sun-drenched landscape was particularly worth seeing.

Sunny weather and storm front

This day on the Oder was very exciting. Again and again big threatening looking thunderstorm fronts moved up. To observe and photograph them was a great pleasure. Again and again, a rainproof shelter had to be sought to survive the heavy downpours that the clouds brought.

It was an exciting day on the Oder river. We had just survived a thundershower when the next cloud approached with thunder and lightning and rain. In between there was wonderful warm summer weather. The air was clean and very clear, the light just wonderful.

Dresden - View to the Elbe Sandstone Mountains

With good visibility, you can see the Elbe Sandstone Mountains from many locations in Dresden. Of course, the observation towers are among the best places to take pictures. The Bismarcksäule observation tower in Dresden-Räcknitz offers views over the entire Elbe valley and up to the heights of the Eastern Ore Mountains (Osterzgebirge).

On this warm sunny June day, new thunderstorm fronts kept moving in. Above the wide river landscape, they came into their own particularly spectacularly. After taking the pictures, it was necessary to find good weather protection.

Evening view over Dresden

The forecast had announced a change in the weather. This often results in particularly exciting light situations. Hoping for spectacular light, I went to the mountain station of the suspension railway in Dresden.

I think capturing movement in the static medium of photography is an exciting subject. Here it was a question of choosing the right amount of motion blur - not always easy in changeable wind. An exposure time of 1/3 sec. led to the desired result.

At the end of a cold winter day showed beautiful evening light. The thin snow cover contrasts with the warm hues of the last light of the setting sun.

Like a ball of fire the sun stands over the Königstein and dips everything in red-orange. With the help of a 235 mm focal length this shot was taken.

This warm sunny June day remains unforgettable. Again and again, new weather fronts moved in over the wide river landscape, bringing heavy thunderstorms with downpours for a short time. Afterwards the sun came out again. The light mood was especially beautiful.

Stormy atmosphere

The light mood shortly before the quickly approaching thunderstorm begins is always particularly exciting for me. The sun is still shining at the shooting location, but the wind is already getting stronger and blowing in gusts. Soon the first raindrops will fall.
