Fascinated, I looked at the approaching thundercloud over the wide floodplain landscape on the Oder River. Its enormous size was impressive. Soon it will eclipse the sun, then violent gusts of wind set in and a heavy downpour descends, accompanied by thunder and lightning. A wonderful spectacle of nature.

Coast impression from Iceland

I was particularly impressed by this location. In the foreground the large stones surrounded by water, then the wide bay in which the waves steadily run up on the black lava sand beach and in the background the majestic mountain range. All this offered an imposing impression, which I have captured in this picture.

Glowing lava

Accompanied by a constant crackling sound, the lava slowly but inexorably flows out of the fissure. The heat can still be felt some distance away. The magma gradually solidifies in the morning air. New layers of rock are constantly being laid on top of each other. Watching this natural spectacle up close is an unforgettable experience.

Threatening thundercloud

This photo shows the lower part of the huge storm front. It travelled parallel to the course of the Oder for a long time. It was very exciting to watch it during the cycle tour. It only reached us later, after we had reached a restaurant on the Oder cycle path.

Earth Power

I am always fascinated by the variety of colours in the geothermal areas. Caution is advised when taking pictures in these regions. The stability of the ground changes very quickly, so you should always make sure you are standing on solid ground. If you sink in, there is a risk of serious burns because very hot water rises in many places.

The pseudo-crater Skútustaðagígar at the beautiful Lake Myvatn in North Iceland was formed by steam explosions over a lava flow. I find the contrast between the yellowish grasses and the deep black volcanic ash particularly attractive. The sweeping view across the lake to the snow-capped mountains is magnificent.

During a bicycle tour along the Oder river I could observe this spectacular weather situation. Again and again thunderstorm cells passed through, bringing heavy rain, then the sun shone again as if nothing had happened. This picture was taken in spring. The rivers in the mountains of Norway had a lot of water, which makes the numerous waterfalls and rapids impressive photo motifs. The Bismarcksäule observation tower in Dresden-Räcknitz offers views over the entire Elbe valley and up to the heights of the Eastern Ore Mountains (Osterzgebirge).

Norway is famous for its fjord landscape. I was very impressed by the narrow, deeply cut coastal valleys. In this shot, the already setting sun conjured beautiful red tones on the underside of the clouds. I used a telephoto lens to capture this special moment.

Blue ice

Blue ice blocks of all sizes lie on the black lava beach in southern Iceland. They come from the Vatnajökull glacier and are washed out of the Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon onto the offshore black lava beach by the forces of the ebb and flow of the tide. There they are exposed to the wild surf of the Atlantic. Little by little they melt away.

Aurora over a arch of rocks

This shot was taken under difficult conditions. Fierce wind and rain clouds ensured that the rough coast was exposed to a constant drizzle. The strong aurora showed up in clear bright stripes. I'm very grateful to experience this magical moment.

I photographed this peaceful scene in Frauenhain, northwest of Dresden. There you can find a beautiful lake landscape, which invites you to go cycling or walking.

Glacier view

The glacier lagoon Jökulsárlón is a special place. Blue shimmering ice floats in a large lake in front of the magnificent backdrop of the mighty glacier Vatnajökull. Cloudy weather allows the photographer to capture the blue color in particularly rich contrast. Here you can find motifs for almost all focal lengths. It is very worthwhile to plan a lot of time for this extensive location.

Goðafoss in the north of Iceland lives up to its name 'Waterfall of the Gods'. Huge masses of water coming from the highlands make for a natural spectacle worth seeing. In this shot, the drizzle dispersed by the headwind was a great challenge. The lens protection filter, which is indispensable here, had to be cleaned after every shot.
