Moonlight and Aurora

Two light sources were active in this shot: The aurora borealis and bright moonlight from the side, a very appealing combination for me. Patience was needed when taking the pictures, I spent several hours at this spot.

Ice and light in Iceland

On the beach in front of the glacier lagoon Jökulsárlón in the south of Iceland, the pieces of ice broken off the glacier become the plaything of the Atlantic waves. The scene is particularly impressive in the light of the rising or setting sun.

Coastal view in Norway

I had been looking forward to visiting the beautiful island of Vågsøy. The varied landscape invites a variety of activities, beautiful coastal walks lead to spectacular viewpoints. Even a wide sandy beach can be found. Especially worthwhile is a longer stay at the lighthouse Kråkenes fyr.

Ice on the black beach

Magical light gives the ice blocks something artificial, man-made. The delicate colors and clear contrasts look as if they were created for an exhibition on a jet-black beach.

Winter beach

In winter, the Lofoten Islands take a break from the summer crowds. The mountainous coastal landscape has its charm at any time of year.

Glacier lagoon with blue ice

This glacier lagoon is a very exciting location. Icebergs in different shades of blue float in the water, with the mighty Vatnajökull glacier visible far behind. Low tide and high tide bring movement into the impressive ice world.

Coast impression from Iceland

I was particularly impressed by this location. In the foreground the large stones surrounded by water, then the wide bay in which the waves steadily run up on the black lava sand beach and in the background the majestic mountain range. All this offered an imposing impression, which I have captured in this picture.

Strong surf on the Atlantic coast

I was fascinated by the unbridled force with which the Atlantic waves hit the west coast of the Caribbean island of Guadeloupe. My aim was to capture this feeling with the help of a short exposure time. I used a telephoto lens so that I could maintain a good safety distance.

Earth Power

I am always fascinated by the variety of colours in the geothermal areas. Caution is advised when taking pictures in these regions. The stability of the ground changes very quickly, so you should always make sure you are standing on solid ground. If you sink in, there is a risk of serious burns because very hot water rises in many places.

Waterfall in Iceland

This beautiful waterfall on the edge of the highlands is surrounded by huge basalt cliffs. The scenery is wild and powerful on the one hand and picturesque and intoxicatingly beautiful on the other, just like the entire volcanic island of Iceland.

Pseudocrater at Myvatn in Iceland

The pseudo-crater Skútustaðagígar at the beautiful Lake Myvatn in North Iceland was formed by steam explosions over a lava flow. I find the contrast between the yellowish grasses and the deep black volcanic ash particularly attractive. The sweeping view across the lake to the snow-capped mountains is magnificent.

Azores - View to the volcano Pico

The driveway through grassy green meadows leads the eye to the silhouette of the volcano Pico, highest mountain in Portugal on the Azores island of the same name, which rises majestically in the distance. This intense green of the Azores seems to glow and offers strong contrasts with the blue of the sea.

Hawaii Lava Flow

The glowing lava can fully unfold its pictorial effect here because the photo was taken early in the morning in low ambient light. This was preceded by an adventurous night-time hike to the lava flow of the Kilauea volcano in Hawaii.

Coastal light on Majorca

The north of Mallorca offers many landscapes worth seeing. After a marvellous hike through the mountains between Artà and the coast, I was able to enjoy some special evening light just before sunset. I captured the movement of the water using an extended exposure time to achieve a romantic effect.

Crater lake on São Jorge

The island of São Jorge in the Azores is shaped like the bow of a ship lying on its keel. Many extinct volcanoes are lined up in the centre of the island. There are always wonderful views of the neighbouring island, especially Pico. This island is beautiful, a paradise for nature lovers, hikers and, last but not least, photographers.

Capturing the dynamics of the Atlantic waves together with the blocks of ice from the glacier lagoon is an exciting endeavour. When searching for motifs, never lose sight of the waves, which are regularly particularly strong. Then it''s time to seek safe ground for a short time.

Experiencing this elemental force in the first light of the new day was a particularly impressive experience. The lava flowed slowly but inexorably. I could feel the intense heat and the forces that shaped our planet were very present to me.

In the waterfall

This photo location places high demands on people and equipment. You walk behind the waterfall and have to deal with a lot of spray, the photographic equipment used has to be able to withstand this. It is a special experience.

Colored ashes

Iceland owes the rich red tones of this picture to volcanism. I am always fascinated by the colors and landscapes created by this powerful force of nature.

In this shot, the light of the moon had illuminated the snow-covered mountains of the Lofoten Islands, along with aurora borealis in the form of a light sign. This light made the deep, cold night in the north a particularly impressive experience.

Indonesia - fishing boats on the beach

The picturesque fishing boats I could photograph on the island of Java. At low tide, a calm atmosphere lay over the harbor. This changes quickly when the boats bring fresh catch ashore after leaving.

Kannesteinen

The Atlantic surf formed this remarkable rock on the west coast of Norway. The picture was taken in rainy weather, which for me fits very well with the melancholy emanating from the Kannestein.

The black lava sand beach in front of the Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon is a particularly exciting location. The smaller blocks of ice that have emerged from the lagoon into the sea become the play of the wild Atlantic waves.

The beautiful contrast of jet-black lava sand to the swell and the snow-capped mountains in the background makes this image particularly appealing to me. The Atlantic waves run out on the flat shore area and thus serve as a mirror for the majestic mountain range.

This winter impression from the Lofoten Islands in Norway was taken under exciting conditions. To capture the dynamics of the surf, I had to choose the lowest possible shooting position. The Atlantic waves come with very different force, high attention was required to higher waves in time to get out of the way.

Sunbeams on Santorini

The crater rim, which forms the main island of Thira, rises to over 300 metres out of the Mediterranean. The view across the sea to the other islands of the archipelago is impressive. Shortly before sunset, clouds moved in front of the sun, creating a wonderful colour spectacle. This moment remains unforgettable.

The blue iceberg rises majestically from the cold water of the glacier lagoon. The sun has just set, but still colors a higher cloud layer with warm hues. This sight and the special atmosphere of this place will remain unforgotten to me forever.

In the highlands of the Azores island of Flores, a dead-straight road leads through the beautiful crater landscape. The lush greenery is favoured by regular rains that pour down from the clouds produced by the trade winds.

The highlands of Iceland offer countless exciting landscape motifs. The masses of water flowing from the large glaciers towards the coast are very impressive. Here you can imagine what happens when a volcano erupts under one of the glaciers ... .

Water art

Volcanoes and water characterise Iceland in a special way. Countless waterfalls of different sizes and locations can be seen. In this photo, taken in October, I chose a relatively narrow frame in order to show the beautiful structures.

Mallorca - View to Cap de Formentor

The summit of Morro de Catalunya is reached by a steep climb from Cala Figuera cove. A sense of direction and caution are necessary because the path before the summit is unclear. Once at the top, you are rewarded with a beautiful view. This photo was taken halfway up, in the middle of the steep climb that begins west of the bay.

The vast landscapes of Iceland leave us in awe. Volcanic bergs, waterfalls, wild coasts, the vast highlands ... . And in addition, often spectacular light conditions.

Aurora borealis

Auroras are like magical plays of color in the dark sky, conjured up for us by the solar wind in the upper layers of the atmosphere. Anyone who has stood beneath this spectacle cannot escape the magic of this dance of lights. Here the rocks of the coast are the backdrop for this light show.

On the volcanic beach

This shot was taken on a dark lava sand beach on the beautiful Snaefellsnes peninsula in western Iceland. The contrast of the massive rock forms created by volcanism and the fast-moving clouds is the basis of this image composition.

Mallorca - View of the Formentor Peninsula

The north of Majorca offers many landscapes worth seeing. Cap de Formentor stretches far out into the Mediterranean. There are spectacular views in many places. A wide-angle lens with a focal length of 14mm was used for this special perspective.

Coastal light

On the day this photo was taken, there was a stormy wind. It was difficult to move around. I had to find a location with some protection from the wind and take a very stable position to be able to capture the special light atmosphere.

Mallorca / Majorca - View over Pollença

The island of Mallorca offers very different motifs. Here is a panoramic view of the beautiful old town of Pollença with its sea of houses interspersed with alleys and the Calvary el Calvari, with the Eglésia del Calvari chapel and the Carrer del Calvari staircase leading up to it. The place where the photo was taken is the Puig de Maria, the local mountain opposite. The climb is worthwhile not only because of the wonderful view, but also because the monastery café is very inviting.

What a place! Behind the waterfall, the last rays of sunlight provide the necessary light to capture the scenery on the lens. A wide-angle lens brings everything into the picture. Successful!

Strong surf over stones in sunlight

With the help of a telephoto lens, I was able to keep enough distance from the wild surf to be able to photograph relatively safely. Caution is always advised, the waves can unleash a tremendous force.
I want to show the power and beauty of this surf to those who see the pictures. Perhaps you have experienced such waves before.

About an hour''s drive north of the Mallorcan capital, you reach the lovely region around the old town of Artá. It is picturesquely overlooked by the pilgrimage church Sant Salvador and already on the approach you think to guess the worth seeing views that would offer from above.

The Azores island "São Jorge" is 53.5 kilometers long and up to 6.7 kilometers wide.
Here, at the western end of the island is a magnificent nature park, which invites you to hike. Thereby, from almost every position is the sea to see.

Recently there were news about increasing seismic activity, similar to the Canary Island "La Palma", there followed a destructive volcanic eruption.

This shot was taken under difficult conditions. Fierce wind and rain clouds ensured that the rough coast was exposed to a constant drizzle. The strong aurora showed up in clear bright stripes. I''m very grateful to experience this magical moment.

The North Sea island of Helgoland is well worth a visit. The seals on the dune beach cannot be disturbed if you keep a reasonable distance and use a telephoto lens.

20 seconds exposure time smoothed the sea here. I wanted to create a dreamily melancholic impression, a calm mood. A telephoto lens was used to set the scene of the steep shore at Cape Arkona.

Glacier view

The glacier lagoon Jökulsárlón is a special place. Blue shimmering ice floats in a large lake in front of the magnificent backdrop of the mighty glacier Vatnajökull. Cloudy weather allows the photographer to capture the blue color in particularly rich contrast. Here you can find motifs for almost all focal lengths. It is very worthwhile to plan a lot of time for this extensive location.

Goðafoss in the north of Iceland lives up to its name ''Waterfall of the Gods''. Huge masses of water coming from the highlands make for a natural spectacle worth seeing. In this shot, the drizzle dispersed by the headwind was a great challenge. The lens protection filter, which is indispensable here, had to be cleaned after every shot.

A special highlight is the view from the south coast to the neighbouring island of Pico. The volcanic mountain of the same name with its unmistakable silhouette always magically attracts the eye.

Here you don''t see what you think you see. The photo was taken on the Greek Cyclades island of Milos and it is a white pumice landscape and not fresh snow. The erosion has partly created bizarre shapes and the contrasts of blue and white give a rather unreal touch.
