Coast impression from Iceland

I was particularly impressed by this location. In the foreground the large stones surrounded by water, then the wide bay in which the waves steadily run up on the black lava sand beach and in the background the majestic mountain range. All this offered an imposing impression, which I have captured in this picture.

I was fascinated by the unbridled force with which the Atlantic waves hit the west coast of the Caribbean island of Guadeloupe. My aim was to capture this feeling with the help of a short exposure time. I used a telephoto lens so that I could maintain a good safety distance.

Earth Power

I am always fascinated by the variety of colours in the geothermal areas. Caution is advised when taking pictures in these regions. The stability of the ground changes very quickly, so you should always make sure you are standing on solid ground. If you sink in, there is a risk of serious burns because very hot water rises in many places.

This beautiful waterfall on the edge of the highlands is surrounded by huge basalt cliffs. The scenery is wild and powerful on the one hand and picturesque and intoxicatingly beautiful on the other, just like the entire volcanic island of Iceland.

Pseudocrater at Myvatn in Iceland

The pseudo-crater Skútustaðagígar at the beautiful Lake Myvatn in North Iceland was formed by steam explosions over a lava flow. I find the contrast between the yellowish grasses and the deep black volcanic ash particularly attractive. The sweeping view across the lake to the snow-capped mountains is magnificent.

The driveway through grassy green meadows leads the eye to the silhouette of the volcano Pico, highest mountain in Portugal on the Azores island of the same name, which rises majestically in the distance. This intense green of the Azores seems to glow and offers strong contrasts with the blue of the sea.

The glowing lava can fully unfold its pictorial effect here because the photo was taken early in the morning in low ambient light. This was preceded by an adventurous night-time hike to the lava flow of the Kilauea volcano in Hawaii.

The north of Mallorca offers many landscapes worth seeing. After a marvellous hike through the mountains between Artà and the coast, I was able to enjoy some special evening light just before sunset. I captured the movement of the water using an extended exposure time to achieve a romantic effect.

The island of São Jorge in the Azores is shaped like the bow of a ship lying on its keel. Many extinct volcanoes are lined up in the centre of the island. There are always wonderful views of the neighbouring island, especially Pico. This island is beautiful, a paradise for nature lovers, hikers and, last but not least, photographers.

The summit of Morro de Catalunya is reached by a steep climb from Cala Figuera cove. A sense of direction and caution are necessary because the path before the summit is unclear. Once at the top, you are rewarded with a beautiful view. This photo was taken halfway up, in the middle of the steep climb that begins west of the bay.

On the day this photo was taken, there was a stormy wind. It was difficult to move around. I had to find a location with some protection from the wind and take a very stable position to be able to capture the special light atmosphere.

Mallorca / Majorca - View over Pollença

The island of Mallorca offers very different motifs. Here is a panoramic view of the beautiful old town of Pollença with its sea of houses interspersed with alleys and the Calvary el Calvari, with the Eglésia del Calvari chapel and the Carrer del Calvari staircase leading up to it. The place where the photo was taken is the Puig de Maria, the local mountain opposite. The climb is worthwhile not only because of the wonderful view, but also because the monastery café is very inviting.

Glacier view

The glacier lagoon Jökulsárlón is a special place. Blue shimmering ice floats in a large lake in front of the magnificent backdrop of the mighty glacier Vatnajökull. Goðafoss in the north of Iceland lives up to its name 'Waterfall of the Gods'. Huge masses of water coming from the highlands make for a natural spectacle worth seeing. In this shot, the drizzle dispersed by the headwind was a great challenge. The lens protection filter, which is indispensable here, had to be cleaned after every shot.
